A semester of theory turned real when ROC’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program hosted their annual Pre-K Day. Students brought young siblings and cousins to class for a day of merriment. The younger kids were treated to engaging activities, treats, and a bit of Christmas magic. The high school kids got to experience first-hand classroom management, lesson planning and delivery, and age-appropriate student-teacher interactions.
“I was a greeter this morning, so I asked each child their name and introduced them to the toys (prior to our lessons). I think Pre-K Day, along with Baby Day, are very important. Today we had 3, 4, and 5 year olds, so they really were grasping what we were showing them. This (event) is important since it gives us that initial toe in the water of how it is really going to be (once we enter the classroom).” – Darla L.; Senior, Bakersfield High / ROC
All this is in preparation for ROC student internships which will begin in a few short weeks. Over 50 ROC ECE students will be assigned to a local classroom where they will not only assist the instructor, but actually get to prepare and deliver several lessons.
At ROC, the learning never ends!
